Amount in Words (Rupees to Words)

Turn any Rupees amount into cheque-safe words in the Pakistani format — lakh, crore, arab and kharab — in English or Urdu.

Words for the cheque

Twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven rupees and eighty-nine paisa only

Why the Pakistani amount format differs

Pakistani cheques are written in the South Asian number system, which counts in groups of two digits after the hundreds instead of groups of three. That is why 1,23,45,678 is written One Crore Twenty-Three Lakh Forty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Seventy-Eight — most payroll, invoicing and accounting software in Pakistan still prints amounts this way, and banks expect it on the instrument itself.

Always write the amount in words to match the numeric figure exactly and end it with "Only". A mismatch between the figure and the words is among the top five reasons banks in Pakistan return cheques, and leaving off "Only" invites tampering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the South Asian number system used on Pakistani cheques?

Pakistan uses lakh (one hundred thousand), crore (ten million), arab (one billion) and kharab (one hundred billion) on top of thousands. 12,34,567 reads as "Twelve Lakh Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven Rupees".

How do you write paisa on a cheque in words?

Put paisa after the rupees, separated by "and". For 1,000.75 write "One Thousand Rupees and Seventy-Five Paisa Only".

Should I write "Only" at the end of a cheque amount?

In English, yes — it goes at the end: "One Thousand Rupees Only". In Urdu it is a guard word placed at the start: "صرف ایک ہزار روپے". Either way it prevents anyone adding extra digits or words to the amount, which is a common cheque-tampering trick.

What is the maximum amount this tool can convert?

Up to Rs 999,999,999,999.99 — just under one trillion rupees. Every real bank instrument stays well below this.

Do banks accept amounts in words in Urdu?

Yes. Karachi, Lahore and other branches routinely accept Urdu amounts. What matters is that the words match the numeric figure — a mismatch is the most common reason for a returned cheque.
