Why the tola still matters for gold in Pakistan
In Pakistan and across the subcontinent, gold prices are quoted per tola ("bhaav" in the market) and goldsmiths weigh jewellery in tola, masha and ratti. The system is simple at heart: a tola is fixed at 11.6638 grams, a tola splits into 12 masha, and each masha into 8 ratti — so a full tola is 96 ratti. Grams and kilograms simply follow the metric side.
Two habits keep this system honest: always watch the weighing on a digital scale (or weigh again yourself), and remember that weight is not purity. A 22K bangle and an 18K bangle can weigh the same tola yet hold very different amounts of pure gold — purity usually matters more than unit conversion in a buying decision.
