How Bill Splitting Works
Split Methods
- Equal Split: Divides the total equally among all participants. Simplest for shared rent or equal usage.
- By Percentage: Each person pays a specific percentage (must total 100%). Good for unequal usage or income-based splits.
- By Units: Custom shares like kWh consumed, days stayed, or any unit count. The bill is divided proportionally.
Settlement Transactions
Instead of everyone paying everyone, the tool calculates the minimal set of transfers needed. People who overpaid (positive balance) receive money; people who underpaid (negative balance) pay.
CSV Export
Download a CSV with all participant details, amounts owed/paid, balances, and settlement transactions. Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet app.
Tips for Roommates
- Track payments weekly to avoid large end-of-month settlements.
- Use the "Paid" field to record who paid the bill each time.
- For utilities, consider "By Units" if you have meter readings.
- Settle monthly to avoid accumulating large balances.
