How big is a 5 Marla house?

A 5 Marla plot is 1,361.25 sq ft with the Revenue Marla (5 × 272.25) or 1,125 sq ft with the Society Marla (5 × 225). That is about one-tenth of an acre either way. In most Pakistani housing schemes a 5 Marla corner plot fits a compact three-bedroom house with a small courtyard; interior builders' space is usually quoted separately from the plot's gross area, so always account for the 10–15 ft setback and the driveway when planning.

Works the same way for land records: when a file mentions "two kanal," a Revenue kanal is 5,445 sq ft but a Society kanal is 4,500 sq ft — a difference of almost 1,000 sq ft over two kanals, which matters in any per-marla price comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a Marla differ between areas?

Marla is a local unit, not an international one. Government records use the 272.25 sq ft Revenue Marla; many newer housing societies quote the older 225 sq ft value. Confirm which standard applies to the plot before negotiating.

What is the difference between Marla and Kanal?

One Kanal is always 20 Marla. The relationship is fixed — only the square-foot size of the Marla changes by locality, which is why a kanal can be 5,445 sq ft or 4,500 sq ft depending on the standard.

How many kanals make an acre?

An acre is 43,560 sq ft, equal to 8 revenue kanals or 160 revenue marlas. The acre is a fixed international unit, so it never changes with the local Marla standard.

What is a Sarsai?

A Sarsai is one quarter of a Marla and equals 30.25 sq ft, so one Revenue Marla is exactly 9 Sarsai. It is still used in some older records and in trading small pieces of agricultural land.
