IELTS Band Calculator

Convert listening and reading raw scores into IELTS bands, add your writing and speaking scores, and see the overall band rounded to the nearest half band.

Test module

Reading uses a different raw-score table for each module.

Band 7.0
Band 7.0
Conversion tables are approximate. Test versions are equated individually, so use your official Test Report Form for a final result.

How the overall band is calculated

Add the four section scores and divide by four:

overall = (listening + reading + writing + speaking) / 4

The average is then rounded to the nearest half band. A final average ending in .25 rounds up; .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Academic vs General Training

General Training reading is scored more generously for the same band. For example:

  • 19 correct: Academic band 5.0, General band 5.5.
  • 15 correct: Academic band 4.5, General band 5.0.
  • Listening uses the same table for both modules.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good IELTS band?

Many university courses ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, while some professional and immigration routes require 7.0 or higher with minimum section scores.

Why does my result differ from this calculator?

Raw-score conversion varies slightly between test versions and official marking. The tables here are a study aid, not a replacement for an official IELTS result.

Is IELTS the same as TOEFL?

No. They are separate English tests with different score scales. Check the requirement for your university or visa before choosing one.
